Jennifer’s Divorce Story
Due to a series of unfortunate events, I recently found myself as a newly single mom. My name is Jennifer and I’m known as mom to my 5 year old daughter Olivia and 2 year old son Andrew.
Navigating the rough waters of divorce has proven to prompt many changes within my home, some positive and others negative. I don’t think I ever quite fully understood what the notion of divorce would be to my children and how it would ultimately affect their emotional growth and well-being.
In fact, I consider it my primary job to help my children deal appropriately with their changing lives. My ability to provide a stable environment in order to guide them through this storm is hampered a bit by the fact that I work out of home full time as a teacher. In an ideal world, I would be a stay at home mom, but since that is not possible, I do the best I can.
Unfortunately, my ex-husband Mark is not very involved in their lives, which causes the majority of the child-rearing responsibilities to rest with me. Although my ex and I have joint custody, the children only see their father when they visit him every other weekend.
Although our kids did not struggle with our new family arrangement at the very beginning, I am slowly seeing signs that indicate the separation from their father is affecting them. I try my best every day to provide a loving and caring environment in which to nurture my children and help them to understand that it is not their fault that their father and I divorced.
Beyond that, I hope to help my children learn that taking responsibility for yourself means being accountable for your actions and communicating your feelings in an appropriate manner. I am determined that my children will emerge on the other side of this divorce, and thus their childhoods, as healthy and strong people.
